| Descrizione: | One of the central tenets of Costa Rica’s development model has been environmental conservation, a key pillar for achieving sustainability and fostering human development. Numerous public policy actions and initiatives promoted by various sectors have been structured around this commitment, many of which have generated significant benefits for the country. Despite its importance, there is little systematic information available, and no system of indicators exists to allow for continuous monitoring of the state of the environment. In this context, there are specific research projects, such as the one developed by the State of the Nation Program, which aims to analyze Costa Rica’s environmental performance, study its progress, identify challenges, and generate tools for decision making, and the formulation and implementation of public policies. Since 1994, the State of the Nation Report, in its chapter Harmony with Nature, has examined the country’s environmental performance using a set of indicators and research (both its own and that of other institutions) developed collaboratively and participatively. Its purpose is to promote informed citizen participation in public affairs and decision-making that fosters opportunities and capabilities for all inhabitants. This has established it as one of the oldest national environmental monitoring initiatives, combining annual tracking of the various topics on its research agenda with in-depth analysis and methodological innovations.
