Description:Introduction: Students’ motivation towards physical activity is a key factor in the development of healthy habits from an early age. Objective: To analyse the relationship between the satisfaction and frustration of basic psychological needs (autonomy, competence, and relatedness) and the intention to be physically active in Primary Education students, within the framework of Self-Determination Theory, as well as to examine whether significant differences existed based on sex. Methods: A total of 192 students (M = 9.94 years; 54% girls) participated and completed validated questionnaires to assess basic psychological needs, motivation towards Physical Education, and the intention to be physically active. Results: The satisfaction of competence and relatedness was positively and significantly associated with a greater interest in physical activity, whereas the frustration of these needs had a significant negative impact. Additionally, sex differences were observed, as boys reported higher intention to be physically active than girls, with competence being more relevant for boys and relatedness for girls. Conclusion: These findings highlight the importance of creating educational environments that foster the satisfaction of basic psychological needs in Physical Education, particularly during primary school years, as a strategy to promote active and healthy lifestyles from early childhood.
