Gender, family and the sexual division of labor: a three-generation phenomenological study in Costa Rica

| תיאור: | The objective of this article is to analyze the transformations and persistencies in Costa Rican household dynamics, adopting materialist feminism and the theory of sexual stratification as an interpretive framework. Methodologically, a phenomenological design is employed, based on fifteen in-depth interviews conducted with three generations of women from the same consanguineous line across various regions of the country (Guanacaste, Puntarenas, Limón, San José, and Cartago). The results articulate an intergenerational incongruity: while significant changes in mentalities regarding marriage, sexuality, and procreation are evident—mediated by education and access to contraceptives—internal household logics continue to be governed by a rigid sexual division of labor. It is concluded that, although there is greater autonomy in individual decision-making regarding unions, this has not translated into a democratization of the domestic space, where economic dependence and the unequal allocation of reproductive tasks prevail, thus perpetuating structural gender inequality beyond discourse. |
