In the debate, Sánchez criticized Mariátegui’s nationalist thesis, calling it exclusivist, homogenizing, based on a myth of autochthony, founded on the concept of class, and refuted by history. Sánchez, by contrast, proposed a more comprehensive view of the Peruvian nation, championing the figure of the mestizo in national history.
