Endemic Structural Factors in Costa Rica's Crime Crisis: Testimonies of Former Hitmen as Social Subjects

| その他の書誌記述: | This study examines the structural and contextual factors contributing to Costa Rica's crime surge. The original study covered 2013-2017, whereas the present study extends the analysis through 2025, a period in which the homicide rate has reached historic highs. Economic inequality, cultural hyperalienation, and changes in the criminal justice system are described as endemic factors in the crime crisis. The study adopted a qualitative approach and used the life-story method to document the testimonies of former hitmen convicted of homicide linked to organized crime. The results indicate that these three factors constitute the systemic basis for the dehumanization and extreme alienation of a new criminal subject, whose characteristics reflect the particular features of the neoliberal consolidation model in Costa Rica. |
