Configuration of the field of library and information studies in Ibero-America: habitus and capital in scientific production

| Deskribapena: | The scientific field of library and information studies in Ibero-America lacks a precise delimitation that would allow a comprehensive understanding of its theoretical, epistemological, and professional configuration. The aim of this study was to delineate this field through an analysis of the scientific output indexed in the Web of Science database. A descriptive investigation was conducted using a bibliometric approach and social network analysis. The sample comprised 8,951 documents published between 2014 and 2024. Scientific productivity, most cited authors, publication outlets, institutional and international collaboration, and the thematic distribution of research were analyzed. The results show sustained growth in scientific output, with a notable increase from 2018 onwards associated with the inclusion of new Ibero-American journals in Web of Science. Brazil and Spain account for the largest share of scientific production and academic leadership in the region. Likewise, research related to Information Science, data management, and librarianship predominates. It is concluded that the field exhibits a scientific structure led by Spain and Brazil, accompanied by a growing internationalization of research. Collaboration networks are concentrated mainly in these countries and display a predominant thematic orientation toward Information Science and knowledge management. |
