Emergence, Reductionism, and Holography in Contemporary Metaphysics

| その他の書誌記述: | This article examines the tension between classical physicalist reductionism and the forms of ontological emergence that arise from the most recent developments in quantum gravity, particularly the holographic principle and the AdS/CFTAdS/CFTAdS/CFT correspondence conjecture. It is argued that the distinction between weak emergence, compatible with Humean supervenience and ultimately explicable by the underlying microphysics, and strong emergence, which requires downward causation and levels of reality with their own ontological autonomy, is not sufficient to capture what occurs when spacetime itself is treated as a property derived from quantum entanglement among the degrees of freedom of a boundary theory. Drawing on geometrogenesis and the ER=EPRER = EPRER=EPR conjecture, the metaphysical implications of this holographic revolution are examined: the illusion of locality as a fundamental principle, the problem of determining which of the two frameworks in an exact duality —the interior gravitational bulk or the lower-dimensional quantum boundary— constitutes the fundamental description of reality, and the crisis of reductionist atomism in the face of an informational holism that grants ontological primacy to relations over parts. Finally, three still-open questions in this research agenda are examined: the extension of the holographic correspondence to cosmologies with a positive cosmological constant, the possible reconciliation of downward causation in complex systems with the holographic emergence of spacetime, and the rethinking that this emergence demands of the quantum measurement problem. |
