Descripción:Infectious diseases are transboundary in nature, readily crossing political borders. Brucel- losis is a prime example of this ability for pathogens to move and disperse across the land- scape. Brucella species, particularly B. abortus and B. melitensis, have a well-documented spread from their origins in the Fertile Crescent to a global distribution via movement of infected livestock. Yet, this is not just an ancient issue as this dispersal continues to today, with regional movement of livestock and global movements of people infected with brucel- losis. We reviewed the cross-border movement of Brucella in contemporary times, with a particular focus on molecular epidemiological methods that have been used to track move- ment of infected animals and people. Several different genetic and genomic approaches have been used for trace-back studies, and we discuss the pros and cons of the primary methods. Moreover, we detail the major patterns and causes of cross-border movement of brucellosis. Finally, we propose solutions to prevent or limit pathogen movement, while acknowledging regional differences and the immense challenges associated with porous borders and poorly regulated animal transport.
