| Opis: | The aim of this article is to analyze the construction of Chinese imaginary in Costa Rica between 2007 and 2010, a period characterized by a diplomatic shift that let to the break with Taiwan and the beginning of official relationships with the People’s Republic of China. From Latin American critical point of view, Chinese representation oscillated between the promise of modernization and the concern about new forms of dependency, which reflect the tensions of a new political reordening. The analysis of a corpus of news published by La Nación, La República and Al Día, reveals these predominant themes: diplomatic politics and official recognition, economic cooperation and infrastructure, and cultural and institutional presence. This study stablishes that these media not only informed, but also legitimized the Chinese presence as an influence on development, and minimized the debates about autonomy, transparency, and sustainability. Unlike ambivalent treatment historically given to the United States, China was presented as an efficient and benevolent partner, but not without tensions and problems. |
