Care Workers in Literature on Twentieth-Century Authoritarianism in Central America

| Disgrifiad: | This essay examines a purposive selection of a novel and historical-biographical works addressing authoritarian regimes in Central America during the twentieth century, with the aim of analyzing the interactions between care workers and the political leaders portrayed in these works. Drawing on novels such as El Señor Presidente by Miguel Ángel Asturias, as well as historical-biographical studies of Tiburcio Carías, Anastasio Somoza, and Maximiliano Hernández Martínez, the essay explores the role of care within the intimate environments of these figures. The findings suggest that, although occupying subordinate positions, caregivers were witnesses to important actions and decisions made by these rulers. The study seeks to offer a novel perspective on the importance of care work in contexts of authoritarian power, showing how the private sphere also constitutes a political space. |
