Livestock and conservation in the Mar Chiquito Atlantic Park Biosphere Reserve, Argentina: threats and projections for comprehensive management

| Disgrifiad: | [Introduction]: In recent years, the transformation of natural grasslands as a result of agricultural and livestock production has been notable; the loss of biodiversity and soil erosion are recognized as direct consequences of the high levels of animal load and subsequent overgrazing. [Objective]: Our research aims to analyze the relationship between conservation and livestock farming in the Mar Chiquito Atlantic Park Biosphere Reserve, Argentina, including the perspective of local producers, to achieve an environmental diagnosis that allows us to identify and understand the problems arising from the coexistence of livestock activity and conservation purposes. [Methodology]: To this end, semi-structured interviews were conducted with livestock producers from establishments within the BRAPMC and adjacent areas, which allowed for monitoring the projections and threats present in the study area. [Results]: From these interviews, it was possible to access and highlight different aspects that that shape the conservation-livestock relationship within the Reserve. These data enabled the development of a problem tree built around the central issue of the research: “Difficulties in implementing an integrated management approach that fosters the livestock-conservation link in the Mar Chiquito Atlantic Park Biosphere Reserve” Though the problem tree, the main causes generating this difficulty were identified, as well as their consequences. [Conclusions]: According to the results obtained, it can be concluded that livestock farming does not drastically interfere with the conservation objectives of the Biosphere Reserves. |
