Children’s Right to the City: Experiences and Inequalities in Public Space

| תיאור: | This article analyzes mental maps and manual exercises by children in the town of Chamilpa, Mexico. It seeks to understand the relationship that children in this neighborhood have with the city and how they use public space as a right that offers opportunities for play, exploration, and social interaction; these are crucial aspects for the physical, cognitive, emotional, and social development of children. The study identified that, from the interactions in these places, the development of social skills is promoted, such as cooperation, communication, conflict resolution, and teamwork, essential for life in society. These interactions also contribute to developing a sense of belonging and identity with the community and the city. The analysis with a qualitative approach found that children who actively participate in public life from an early age develop an attachment to the place where they live.For this attachment, it is essential to identify inequalities in access to and the quality of public spaces, as well as in opportunities for enjoying them, to guarantee children’s right to a safe, inclusive, and adequate urban environment for their development and well-being. |
