Coastal erosion in the Mexican Pacific: evidence of a regional challenge from Nayarit (1997-2022)

| বিবরন: | [Introduction]: The northern coast of Nayarit, located in the Mexican Pacific, is undergoing accelerated erosion, reflecting a broader coastal issue observed throughout Latin America and other regions worldwide. These ecosystems provide essential environmental services, including climate regulation, flood protection, and support for local economic activities. [Objective]: To analyze erosion and accretion processes in three municipalities of San Blas, Santiago Ixcuintla, and Tecuala by evaluating shoreline changes between 1997 and 2022. [Methodology]: The Digital Shoreline Analysis System (DSAS) was applied to quantify spatiotemporal variations of the shoreline, and NSM, SCE, EPR, and WLR metrics were used to estimate rates of change. [Results]: The findings indicate a predominance of erosive processes and a negative sedimentary balance. Maximum erosion rates reached -22.1 m/year, with a net shoreline retreat of up to -553.6 m. San Blas exhibited the highest proportion of eroded coastline (90 %), followed by Santiago Ixcuintla (80.5 %), and Tecuala (79.2 %). The loss of sediment is primarily associated with reduced fluvial input resulting from the construction of the dam system on the Santiago River. [Conclusions]: This study documents, through the case of Nayarit, a coastal problem of global significance that is reproduced across multiple shorelines in developing countries. Understanding these dynamics is essential for designing evidence-based adaptation strategies and territorial management approaches, providing a key scientific foundation to anticipate risks, guide decision-making, and strengthen the resilience of coastal communities. |
