| Descripció: | Introduction: Cycling helps people maintain an active and healthy lifestyle. In Santander, Colombia, the number of senior master road cyclists has increased in recent years; it is therefore important to identify the specific characteristics of this population in order to inform the development of practices that can slow down the irreversible decline in physical abilities. Objective: To analyse the physical capabilities of senior master cyclists in Santander, providing recommendations for systematic healthy cycling. Methods: Eighteen (18) recreational cyclists were assessed using physical tests of strength, flexibility and leg power on a cycle ergometer with an incremental protocol, alongside body composition analysis via bioimpedance. Results: Mean age (years) 50.39 ± 8; body weight (kg) 75.17 ± 13.5; height (cm) 170.06 ± 4.5; BMI (kg/m²) 26.4 ± 4.8. Negative correlations were found between age and grip strength in the right hand (p ≤ 0.01) and the left hand (p ≤ 0.05); similarly with body fat percentage and leg power (p ≤ 0.01). The cyclists studied have grip strength levels consistent with their age, low flexibility values and average power output of 250 watts. Conclusions: The results of this study indicate that the participants have adequate levels of grip strength and leg power; the data obtained are consistent with their age. However, the flexibility scores are poor, indicating a lack of training in this physical ability, which influences the body’s optimal functioning as people age. |
