Eudaimonia vs. Personal Optimizer: Neo-Aristotelian Ethics and the Academic Debate against Popular Stoicism

| विवरण: | This article addresses the contemporary bifurcation of the revival of classical character ethics between its academic and institutional appropriation — in AI ethics, bioethics, and public policy — and its mass sociocultural absorption by high-performance culture, a phenomenon here designated, following its already-established colloquial name, as "popular Stoicism" or Broicism. It is assumed that utilitarian and deontological frameworks have proven insufficient to address contemporary technological and existential dilemmas, which explains the academic return to Aristotelian areté and to rigorous Stoic epistemology; but it is argued that this same return has been accompanied, at the popular level, by a reduction of philosophy to a technique of workplace resilience that strips Stoicism of its civic commitment, its cosmopolitanism, and, above all, of the physics and logic without which its ethics becomes unintelligible. To this end, the article examines eudaimonia as a techno-ethical metric and phronesis against algorithmic codification, dismantles the popular-Stoic myth of "total control," reclaims the ontological background of Chrysippean Stoicism, and addresses the challenges that the viability of a metaphysics-free Stoicism and the tension between individual virtue and structural change pose to this program. |
