| الوصف: | This article is an exercise in microhistory. It aims to “save from oblivion” a person, a family, a set of times, and a set of places that make up what scholar Luis González calls “the popular version of history.” The article deals with the life of Margarita Giberga Elizondo, daughter of Josefa Elizondo -the Beauty of Guanacaste- and the Spanish colonel Manuel Giberga, names that are etched in Costa Rican annals. Margarita was born in Liberia, Costa Rica, in 1858 and died in Barcelona, Spain, in 1902. Her families, both Costa Rican and Spanish, faced unique circumstances that precast an environment in which kinship, social status, marriage, motherhood, and historical events shaped the life of a girl who, at the age of five, “left for Spain and was never heard from again.” The exploration of unpublished sources, the review of primary records, and the unexpected and valuable collaboration of other researchers have contributed novel elements to construct, with realism and accuracy, the most relevant features and events in which Margarita’s life unfolded. |
