| Descripció: | This article aims to identify university students’ perceptions of the importance and self-efficacy associated with information literacy competencies, considering five key dimensions: searching, evaluating, processing, communicating, and the ethical use of information, including the responsible management of artificial intelligence tools. Based on a mixed-methods study, both quantitative and qualitative in nature, conducted with 266 students from diverse fields of knowledge at a public university in northern Mexico, several significant gaps were identified between the importance attributed to these competencies and the actual confidence students expressed in applying them correctly. The results revealed that, although students acknowledge the relevance of these skills throughout their academic and professional trajectories, there remains a strong perception of insufficient training, particularly in the use of reference management software, access to academic databases, and the critical evaluation of digital sources. Complementary qualitative analysis confirmed these shortcomings and further emphasized the need for a more practical, situated, and transversal approach to information literacy. In this regard, it is proposed that universities in the region adopt discipline-specific pedagogical strategies, foster faculty training in the ethical use of information and AI, and promote workshops or training initiatives that strengthen students’ self-efficacy. Addressing these gaps is not only a requirement for meaningful learning but also represents an institutional commitment to preparing critical, responsible citizens equipped to meet the challenges of the digital society. |
