Description:Brucella amazoniensis is a recently discovered species represented by several isolates from humans (French Guiana, Brazil and USA) and a cow (Texas, USA). Most human cases had close contact with local wildlife; our current hypothesis is thus that some of these animals could serve as a reservoir for this species. B. amazoniensis seems also genetically linked to B. nosferati, another new species concomitantly isolated from hematophagous bats (Costa Rica), and to B. neotomae, a species isolated in USA (rodents) and Costa Rica (humans). This presentation will provide an update about the integrative (so called “One Health”) investigations currently performed through an international partnership involving scientists, health professionals, veterinarians and ecologists from France, French Guiana and Costa Rica. It aims at characterizing these emerging pathogens and identifying the transmission dynamics of brucellosis in the complex ecosystems of neotropical forests. This will improve the understanding and management of brucellosis in this region of the world. Molecular epidemiology could also provide insights into the evolutionary history of this genus.
