Description:The use of antibacterial drugs in veterinary medicine is not restricted to the treatment of bacterial and protozoan diseases, but involves the prevention of these diseases, and it includes the use as animal growth promoters. Notwithstanding, its irrational use as therapeutic agents carries serious problems, like drug inefficiency, persistent and chronic infections, economical loss, and the development of premature antibacterial resistance. This paper intend (debería ser intends) to show practical criteria to be applied when an antimicrobial therapy should be administered, in order to optimize antibiotic use, and to diminish the presentation of those previously mentioned problems.
