| Περιγραφή: | This sociological analysis, based on data on religion in Costa Rica from the 2024 National University Survey (EECR-IDESPO, UNA 2025), argues that significant social shifts have led to a religious transformation that goes beyond traditional institutional structures. The text critiques the application of Secularization Theory to the Latin American context, as it emphasizes the decline of institutional membership and uses metrics that are inadequate for Latin America. Contrary to the secularization hypothesis, the evidence indicates a continued abundance of religion marked by high levels of belief, the vitality of Pentecostalism, and a notable proliferation of practices that extend beyond traditional denominations. Modernization has not diminished faith but instead promoted an independent and flexible religiosity, where individuals combine elements from different traditions and depend on their actions more than on dogmatic adherence. The concept of “Enchanted Modernity” aims to describe this connection: a modern world where the superhuman is active and present in everyday life. Religion shows itself in eclectic, bodily, and emotional practices that occur in secular and personal spaces. |
