Descrição:This essay aims to analyze the places assigned to non-human animals in Guatemalan society in order to explore who they are within a context of species-based stratification. It draws on an anti-speciesist and relational theoretical approach to human-animal interaction, as well as a qualitative methodology based primarily on discourse analysis. Through a qualitative analysis of the Animal Protection and Welfare Law and of political-institutional discourse surrounding two crisis cases involving feral animals and two cases of animal abuse, the essay argues that these legal and political discourses reflect the status assigned to animals in Guatemalan society. It suggests that this status is shaped by speciesist and welfarist valuations, which establish specific places and purposes for animals. Although these valuations formally and legally recognize animals as sentient beings and reject the abuse of those considered pets, they do not grant them the status of social subjects. As a result, they reproduce unequal and exploitative relations between humans and animals.
