Cultures and the Formation of Social Organizations in Central America

| Popis: | Over the final two decades of the 20th century, several Central American countries embarked on democratization processes following prolonged periods of dictatorial rule. International development cooperation played a pivotal role in strengthening civil society organizations, recognizing that process as a critical requirement for fostering participatory democracy. However, these initiatives generally fell short of achieving the expected outcomes. This article examines how the lack of understanding, on the part of development cooperation, of the formative process of social organizations in this region may have contributed to this situation. It argues that deep-rooted historical and cultural influences shaped organizational cultures that did not meet the organizational models promoted by international cooperation. |
