The indigenous family agroproductive unit in the Pacific foothills of Talamanca: La Amistad Biosphere Reserve, Costa Rica

| Diğer Bilgiler: | This article characterizes the indigenous agroproductive unit on the Pacific slope of the Talamanca Mountain Range, within the La Amistad Biosphere Reserve in Costa Rica. To achieve this, an analysis was conducted on 16 agricultural ventures from three indigenous communities in the municipality of Buenos Aires, in the Southern Pacific region. The analysis covered various aspects, including biophysical factors, socioeconomic factors, marketing strategies, and governance related to the family production unit. The study examined the diversification of the indigenous family farming model, the behavior of marketing circuits, and the potential for collaboration to identify contributions to regional development, as well as the challenges that affect its practice and sustainability. This analysis was conducted in the context of government agroproductive policies that have promoted an exogenous development model based on industrial monocultures, leading to socioeconomic and environmental instability, inadequate agricultural production marketing models, and the depletion of agricultural landscapes. Despite the threats it faces, it was determined that the family agricultural production unit in the study area supports the application of principles and practices related to sustainable agriculture. This is essential for contributing to the conservation of biodiversity and ensuring the food security and sovereignty of the residents of the La Amistad Biosphere Reserve. |
