Discourses of exclusion. Indigenous intellectuals and the Nation-State in Costa Rica: a historical perspective

| Miêu tả: | In order to better understand the current situation of Indigenous peoples in Costa Rica, this article reviews how Costa Rican intellectuals addressed their presence during two key moments in the process of crafting the nation-building discourse in that country: in 1892, when the celebrations of the Fourth Centennial of the arrival of the Spanish in America were used to emphasize Costa Rica's European roots, and in 1954, during the push to promote a renewed national identity narrative as part of the University of Costa Rica's reform plans. The methodology is based on analyzing the writings of intellectuals from those periods. The main finding is that, as had historically occurred, both in 1892 and 1954, Indigenous peoples were excluded from the dominant national narrative constructed by the country's cultural elites. From this, it is concluded that understanding the path followed by Costa Rican society in relation to the treatment of Indigenous populations requires studying the narratives circulated by its intellectuals. |
