Cur Síos:In the year that marks the bicentennial of Central America's independence, just over one in ten people who were born in the region live outside of it. This article analyzes recent migration and discusses the question: what are the most important contributions of these transfers in Central America? In particular, two aspects stand out: first, remittances become a kind of privatized social policy. Second, they make a contribution to fiscal revenues in the recipient countries. With the exception of Costa Rica, family remittances dwarf the revenues coming in through Foreign Direct Investment despite the various incentives provided to national and transnational entrepreneurs.
