الوصف: | The present essay aims to evaluate the cardinal environmental impacts caused by the main productive activities driven by neoliberal policies in the country from the 1980s to the present: export agriculture and mass sun-and-beach tourism. The environmental impact is assessed based on how the operation of these productive activities threatens sustainability, understood as the continuity and availability of the natural resources necessary to support the evolutionary processes of human communities. Thus, through the review of literature and specialized archives, along with theoretical and descriptive statistical analysis, it is shown that the institutionalization of neoliberalism in Costa Rica was in response to mandates from international financial organizations in the context of overcoming the 1980 crisis. Similarly, the promotion of export agriculture and mass tourism has caused severe environmental damage that, in addition to threatening sustainability, questions the concept of social welfare that neoliberalism seeks to achieve and generalize. |
