Descripción:The myth of Cartago has recently been read as an expression of Roberto Murillo’s conservative and humanist longing and has been situated within its specific historical context. While this essay does not challenge the substance of that interpretation, it argues that such a reading overlooks the conceptual limits of myth in Murillo’s thought. It therefore proposes a more precise interpretation of the role of myth in his work, based on his understanding of imagination and the idea of origin, before examining how these notions operate in relation to the idyllic image of Cartago. Drawing on a genealogical reading of Murillo’s newspaper articles on Cartago and their connection to his main philosophical theses and early writings, the essay concludes that the myth of Cartago can be understood as a particular form of imaginative flight. This reading shifts the explanatory weight that any historicist interpretation might place on its nature.
