Economic policies by the end of the XX century and beginning of the XXI century: the seed of the agricultural sector dismantling in Costa Rica

Kuvaus:This essay aims to provide a panoramic view in regard to the historical development of the agricultural sector in Costa Rica as a fundamental axis of the economic-social development, and the impact of neoliberal policies, headed initially by the programs of structural adjustment (PAE by its Spanish acronym), which has discouraged the internal investment on this important economic sector in the country, provoking its weakening. It is posed how during some part of the XX century, a policy associated with Keynesianism was implemented with a strong government support that has been reduced and eliminated, driven by the economic interests and varied financial crisis, provoking the abandonment of this model and prioritizing on the deregulation of the imports of agricultural products. Lastly, a series of recommendations are given that would help to recover this productive activity, which is essential to guarantee the livelihood and food security of the Costa Rican population.
