The conservation value of agro-livestock landscapes in the Maya Forest: How medium and large mammals respond to landscape features outside protected areas

Descrição:Agricultural expansion and forest fragmentation represent major threats to tropical mammal assemblages, particularly forest specialists. In Mexicó s Maya Forest region, agro-livestock landscapes dominate the areas surrounding protected forests, yet their role in mammal conservation remains poorly understood. We used camera-trap data (292 stations; 24,955 trap days) to model occupancy patterns of 16 mammal species across agro-livestock landscapes. Species were classified as forest-dependent, resilient, or disturbance-tolerant to examine functional differences in responses to forest cover, fragmentation metrics, and proximity to roads and settlements at spatial scales of 1,000 m and 3,000 m. We predicted that forest-dependent species would respond positively to forest cover and negatively to anthropogenic disturbance, disturbance-tolerant species would show neutral-to-positive associations with human-modified features, and resilient species would exhibit intermediate, scale-dependent responses. Occupancy modeling revealed species-specific, scale-dependent responses. Forest dependent species (e.g., Panthera onca, Leopardus wiedii) exhibited lower occupancy and were positively associated with higher forest cover and increased distance from human disturbance. Disturbance-tolerant species (e.g., Didelphis sp., Procyon lotor) exhibited higher overall occupancy across modified landscapes, tolerant of forest oss and fragmentation. Resilient species such as Nasua narica or Leopardus pardalis demonstrated intermediate occupancy, generally benefiting from forest cover. Our results indicate that agro-livestock matrices can support mammal assemblages but are insufficient to maintain forest specialists without adequate forest cover, under- scoring the need to prioritize forest cover and remnant forest patches in conservation planning. Multi-scale landscape planning in agro-productive systems is essential for effective management of human-modified tropical ecosystems.
