Harmonizing Resonances: Sounds of Labor and Liturgy Through the Listening of Anton Sepp in the Jesuit Missions of Early 18th Century

| Описание: | Introduction: In the year 1691, Anton Sepp arrived in Buenos Aires on his way to the Jesuit missions in Paraguay, leaving behind a series of letters in which he described various auditory events. Objective: This article analyzes the reports of these events to explore the significance of sounds in that specific context. Methods: To achieve this, two significant auditory landscapes in the sources are examined, namely, the workday and liturgical celebrations, taking into account the sounds themselves and their contexts. Results: The sounds of work and liturgy were intertwined, regulated by the sound of the bell that structured the organization of time. However, during festivities, these sounds converged, creating a new auditory space that reflected the vision of the Jesuit missionary project. Conclusions: Work and liturgical sounds were not separate, but rather demonstrated a complementarity that synthesized the Jesuit imaginary. |
