Description:The prevalence of Shigella in six population groups in Guatemala is reported. Rates of prevalence are refered to age, sex, seasonal variation, popula­tion characteristics, altitude, pit privies and water supplies to determine what influence, if any, these factors could have on Shigella prevalece in these local­ities. The different Shígella serotypes that were isolated are reported with reference to the distribution according to locality and according to frequency of isolation. The isolated Salmonella serotypes are also refered to. In view of the importance of obtaining accurate data, special reference is made to the methods and materials employed in this survey.
