Cur Síos:This paper analyzes the early interactions between Japanese and Korean Protestants in Japan, who came to Tokyo to study during the period 1880-1895. It is argued that this encounter played a crucial role in generating significant enthusiasm among Japanese Protestants to disseminate their religious teachings in Korea through evangelization. The paper is divided into three parts. First, the rise of Protestantism is contextualized in relation to the evolving bilateral relationship between Japan and Korea; second, it delves into the interaction between Korean students and Japanese Protestants in the early 1880s; and third, the emerging debate among Japanese Protestants regarding the potential for missionary activities in Korea is examined by connecting them to early educational initiatives undertaken by Japanese Protestants in the Korean context.
