Description:A field reconnaissance trip to map the zones that suffered soil liquefaction and to study the effects along the coastal area of Bocas del Toro, Panama, during the April 22, 1991 earthquake (Ms= 7.5) was performed by the authors. It could be confirmed that most ofthe damage to life lines and structures were caused by soil liquefaction and related effects. The affected area covers 355 km2 of northwestern Panama. Throughout the coastal area of northwestern Bocas del Toro occurned subsidence of up to 0.9 m, which seem to follow a regional pattern or trend and suggests a tectonic process associated to a block system.
