Kuvaus:This essay presents the current status of Spanish ‘in’ and ‘of’ the United States and discusses the phenomenon popularly called Spanglish through the reflections of several scholars on the subject. The literature in linguistics has acknowledged that what in lay terms people call Spanglish, relies on code-switching and code-mixing, switches and mixtures, which can also be described as characteristics of the hybrid identity of many U.S. Latinos. In this paper, I examine this phenomenon of Spanglish from the perspective of mixed identities in intercultural contexts. Finally, I reflect on some significant points to try to deepen and better understand the complex situation of Spanish and the much commented on phenomena surrounding the use of Spanglish in this country.
