| Cur Síos: | Chaetodon sedentarius (reef butterfly fish) and C. aculeatus (longsnout butterfly fish) are differentiated from their Caribbean congeners by meristic characters, snout length, and coloration. In the Santa Marta region of Colombia both species occur in shallower depths than in other Caribbean areas; C. sedentarius is common from 1 m and C. aculeatus is seen from 10 m. It has been proposed recently that Prognathodes, which type species is the longsnout butterfly fish, must be recognized as a separate genus, but such action is based on a controvertible basis and would contribute unnecessary nomenclatural instability. |
