| Description: | The legal system of the Maya of Copán is known only in a fragmentary way. They had a complex system of writing, but no legal texts have been found and it seems that the normative system was exclusively based in customs. There were several social groups, including a hereditary royalty. The family was predominantly patrilineal. It is likely that there was an intense trade, as well as very severe norms about crimes and punishments. |
