Deskribapena:In the last 25 years, numerous archaeological investigations carried out in the surroundings of Culebra Bay, located in the Southern Sector of Greater Nicoya, have achieved a significant amount of 14C dating that have complemented the chronological estimates assigned to the sites through the ceramics. In light of the radiometric data, it is possible to debate the relative antiquity of various ceramic types that have been considered as “markers” of the Ometepe period (1350-1550 AD). This article discusses the 14C data corresponding to some archaeological sites located around the bay, the contexts in which they were obtained, their ceramic association, and data about other areas of northwestern Costa Rica. With this information, everything indicates that the human population around the Culebra bay was very low or null when the Spanish arrived to the area in the 16th century.
