Terrestrial mammals of Alberto Manuel Brenes Biological Reserve, Costa Rica, during the 2009-2012 period

Descripción:Introduction: Mammal research in tropical forest is an arduous and expensive work, however, implementation of new research technology has improved the study of this group in many natural areas of Costa Rica. Objective: Determine the species richness and relative abundance of large and medium mammals’ species of Alberto Manuel Brenes Biological Reserve, San Ramón, Costa Rica, during the 2009-2012 period. Methods: Trap cameras were placed on visitor and surveillance trails for a period of 48 months to record mammals with a size of ≥500 g. Results: 20 species (14 families) of mammals were recorded. Cuniculus paca, Didelphis marsupialis, Nasua narica and Puma concolor were the species with the greater relative abundance. All felines’ species known to be present in the area were recorded, including the jaguar. The relative abundance of the species varied over the years but did not show any specific pattern. When comparing visitor trails and surveillance trails, no significant difference was found with respect to the abundance of mammals between both types of trails. Conclusions: 20 mammals’ species were recorded, but the species richness is probably greater; no evident pattern was observed in the relative abundance of any species during the years of study. The jaguar presence is a good indication about the positive state of conservation of the area. There is no evidence supporting the idea that mammals avoid the nearby visitor trails next to the Biological Field Station.
