Threats to tropical wetlands: Medio Queso Wetland as a case of degraded system

| Описание: | Despite the importance of wetlands in terms of climate feedback, they are featured as one of the most rapidly declining ecosystems in the world. Future climate scenarios suggest a series of negative impacts on wetland conditions related to reduced water level and increasing temperatures, which will likely deteriorate extended areas over much longer periods, compromising population of plants, fish, and birds, and human livelihood. Fire and drainage impact the carbon (C) dynamics in peatlands, increasing greenhouse gases (GHG) emissions and subsidence of peat soil. The Medio Queso Wetland (Costa Rica), is a relevant transboundary system with important reserves of peat, that spans between Costa Rica and Nicaragua. It has been disturbed by livestock and agriculture development, with local farmers often burning fields and building small-scale drainage systems, impacting the local hydrological connectivity. It is urgent to bring light to the Medio Queso Wetland as a key element for mitigation and adaptation to climate change within a region which is often hit by the passage of tropical storms and cyclones, whose impacts are enhanced by the degradation of vegetation systems in the border. The development of a strategy for Medio Queso Wetland, targeting the preservation of wetland functionality based on their characteristics and economical and social services can be seen as an opportunity to mitigate the impact of severe weather conditions and contribute with the welfare of the communities in the area. |
