Description:The name Epistephium derives from the Greek epi-, upon, and stephanos, crown, in reference to the crown-like calyculus situated prominently at the seed capsule apex (Cameron 2003). Epistephium is broadly distributed in the Neotropics, from Belize to Paraguay, but most species are localized in Northern South America, especially Colombia and northeastern Brazil.
