Disgrifiad:Several studies in climate change and variability are being carried out at the present in the Central American region using time sequences that span several decades. In most cases the interest lies in the changes of the mean level so it is necessary to eliminate strong periodicites if they are present. This process of eliminating periodicities is known as prewhitening and traditionaly has been carried out by the method of anomalies. Recently other authors proposed an alternate method using a notch filter based in an autoregresive moving average ARMA(2,2) process. A low pass filter based in an autoregresive AR(2) process is presented. This filter extracts the mean level of stationary or non-stationary sequences. Its design and aplication are very simple, and it can be implemented easily in an electronic spreadsheet. The three methods arc applied to the maximum and minimum monthly temperatures of the San Jose Station. The sequences start in 1888 and end in 1993. For this particular sequences a fourth method consisting of subtracting the sinusoids also gives good results.
