Beskrivelse:The transnational distribution inherent to streaming television platforms is intended to foster a global network of audiences by utilising the architecture of the internet. Nevertheless, this global “export of meanings” remains subject to the particular cultural conditions in each place of reception, where specific taste cultures and meaning-making dynamics operate. Accordingly, in this chapter, we examine the situated construction of meanings through associative dynamics of social imagination that compare, contrast, and appropriate the media world of Netflix series Stranger Things across both space and time (Couldry 2012). In doing so, we take the opportunity to consider how the seminal work of Tamar Liebes and Elihu Katz 1984, 1986, 1988, 1993) on the international reception of Dallas (USA 1978– 1991, CBS) can inform our understanding of current instances of cross-cultural media reception in the digital era. In its own time, the work of these Israeli mass communication theorists constituted a significant development in the “internationalisation” of audience research. Based upon ethnographic studies conducted during the 1980s, Liebes and Katz captured a decade when US programming dominated television screens in almost every country outside of the Soviet Bloc. As a common focus, Dallas was a TV series centred upon a fabulously rich Texan oil family that dominated television ratings across the world and ran from 1978 to 1991. Notwithstanding its incredible popularity, Dallas was also seen to encapsulate everything that was disliked about American popular culture (Ang 1985). That is, it was considered to be capitalist, sexist, ostentatious, and low-brow. As a global television phenomenon, Dallas nonetheless provided the necessary footprint for a comparative study of cross-cultural reception
