Diagnosis of the current situation of the production and commercialization of the potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) in Zone 1 of Ecuador

| Descrizione: | The objective of this research is to determine the production costs and yields of potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) variety “super chola” in the provinces of Carchi and Imbabura (zone 1 of national planning); as well as to carry out a detailed study of the commercialization chain of this item of agro-economic importance in the country. A documentary, field and descriptive research was carried out, using techniques such as structured surveys, interviews and forums, with producers and associations, in order to address the study problem. As a result, a characterization of the potato agricultural supply chain was obtained, which presents an isolated value added link; The production cost fluctuates between 3.562,68 to 5.584,53 USD / ha of the “super chola” variety potato, of this cost 81,80% corresponds to direct costs (inputs, labor, etc.). The highest yield per hectare was for large producers with 34.087,50 kg/ha, followed by medium ones with 31.815 kg/ha, while the small ones reached a yield of 26 209,50 kg/ha; of this, 15,21% of total production is industrialized. Based on these results, there is a difference of 7,14% in yields between large and medium producers and 30,06% between large and small, respectively. Intermediaries were found to increase the value of potatoes by 42,01%, decrease producer profits, and represent a factor in increasing the price of the product. |
