Descripció:This study estimates the homes and populations without access to drinking water services in Costa Rica, according to the 2022 Census. The total number of homes closed was 17,788, for an estimated total of 55,144 inhabitants. The homes that are supplied with well water are 9,179, for a population of 28,455 inhabitants. The families that are supplied with surface water from rivers or streams were 8,310, equivalent to homes, of which 25,761 inhabitants are estimated. In addition, 299 homes that are supplied from other types of sources (rainwater and others) were identified, for a population of 927 inhabitants. In this context, it is important to note that officials from the National Institute of Statistics and Census (INEC) provided data on towns with at least 10 homes. In this order of things, 51 cantons presented residential communities without access to drinking water services. The cantons with more than 1,000 people without water service for human use and comsuption are Guácimo (1,076), Osa (1,215), Corredores (1,249), Turrialba (1,876), Golfito (2,492), Matina (2,725), Siquirres (2,998), Buenos Aires (3,249), Talamanca (3,491), Perez Zeledón (4,250), Limón (5,521), Sarapiquí (7,093) and Pococí (8,413 inhabitants). Finally, these data point out the clearest inequality in access to drinking water services, which is why it is recommended to address them to achieve the goal of universal access to drinking water by 2030, established by the Sustainable Development Goal. (SDG) specifically in SDG6.
