Geospatial assessment of vegetation cover in resin tapping areas of Oaxaca and Chiapas, Mexico

Descrizione:Forest ecosystems, which provide a wide variety of goods and services essential for life, are under intense pressure. This is mainly due to the expansion of human settlements, land conversion for agriculture and livestock, and the incidence of fires and pests. The aim of this study was to assess changes in vegetation cover in six micro-watersheds with pine resin harvest activity, using a multi-temporal analysis with orthophotos and high-resolution images. Change detection was performed using Quantum GIS software QGIS 3.36.0 “Maidenhead” with the SAGA (System for Automated Geoscientific Analyses) processing toolkit. Between 1995 and 2024, the most affected ecosystems were the juniper forest and the semi-evergreen medium-height forest, which lost 98% and 93% of their area, respectively. Pine-oak and pine forests, in turn, suffered a reduction of 29% and 31% compared to their 1995 extent, adding a loss of 20,095.86 ha. Currently, agricultural expansion threatens the survival of these ecosystems and the provision of essential environmental services in the assessed micro-watersheds, such as biodiversity maintenance, spring recharge, and carbon sequestration.
