Descripción:As a result of the increasing demand for Spanish language teaching for foreigners in the context of technological globalization, the 21st century demands to improve the quality of Spanish as a Foreign Language (SFL) teacher training. This commitment implies researching the historical panorama of the teaching of Spanish as a Second Language in Costa Rica, since there were no publications, and it is expected to be an important reference for research in this field of study in the country. The methodology applied was evaluative research, which pursues the systematic study of specific issues within the context of social change. A total of 14 participants were selected by stratified sampling: teachers and coordinators of the curricular programs. The information in the historical panorama is based on the answers of the interviewees and thorough bibliographic research, which led to the proposal of three important stages of history: Stage 1 (1880s onwards), characterized by the religious order; Stage 2 (1940s onwards), where economic, social, and cultural development was promoted; and Stage 3 (1990s onwards), which is associated with educational tourism. The record of each period reflects how the centers for teaching Spanish as a Second Language were created and developed.
