Diğer Bilgiler:The tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) holds high commercial, productive and economic importance in Costa Rica, triggering the interest of the members of the Tomato Research and Technology Transfer Program (PITTA Tomate) to review the validity of the Regulation No. 31890-MEIC-MAG-S, as an instrument to promote the transparency and proper functioning of the national market. The first step for this review was based in the present study, which aimed at evaluating the characteristics of the fresh tomato in the wholesale market, as a basis for the subsequent discussion of the PITTA Tomate around the aforementioned Regulation. Data and field information were collected to understand the dynamics, origin and conditions of the commercialization and classification of this product, and the obtained data were compared with the provisions of the regulation, through a mixed and descriptive research. As main results, a mixture of quality and size attributes cited in the Regulation was detected when classifying tomatoes in the market, in addition to finding classes of qualities that are not present in the regulation but that are usually referenced in the marketing exercise. The data showed wide variability and in the case of the size, the ranges found in the field differ from the regulatory ranges. This research is considered to be a first input to advance in the discussion on the possibility of revising Regulation No. 31890 and it is recommended to delve into more studies in this regard.
