Contribution of AYA to public heath in Costa Rica 1961-2021

Descripción:The present study describes some contributions of the Costa Rican Institute of Water Supply Systems and Sewerage Systems to public health since its creation in the 60s till now days (1961-2021). In order to supply drinking water and sanitation to the Costa Rican population, the study analyses drinking water coverage by pipework  and coverage with potable drinking water, and its relation to the indicators “Human Development Index” and “Life Expectancy at Birth”. On the other hand, the study analyses the role of AyA in the Cholera epidemic control in Latin America (1991-1998), the importance of supplying potable drinking water during the Influenza A (H1N1) pandemic in 2009, and the important of fostering hygiene and handwash during the current COVID-19 crisis in Costa Rica.
