Descripción:This work is the result of an investigation on the problematic of health-illness among the rural population (predominantly native) of the sierra de Zongolica, Veracruz. It describes and analizes the persistence of the traditional healers that operative in the region and the changes that have happened in their identities and their practices after penetration of modern medicine. A typology of these healers was disived, it took into decount the technical aspects of their practices as well as the ones that belong to the symbolic world. The region represents a privileged space to analyze the process of adaptation and cultural appropiation that have permitted community life and persistence of the present Nahuas as a cultural and ethnic group. The region is also the maintain the native population in conditions of exploitation and subordination.
