Family paradox: A phenomenological study of 6 same-sex couples in Mexico City and their family ties

| Descripción: | Introduction: In Mexico, the family is considered one of the major support networks for same-sex couples. Paradoxically, they can also be a source of stress, tension and emotional vulnerability. Main objective: To broaden the understanding of the factors that intervene for couples to consider their families as a stressor or a support for their relationship. Method and technique: In-depth interviews were conducted with a sample of six same-sex couples, three women and three men, residents of Mexico City with an average age of 34.3 years. The data were analyzed according to Van Manen's hermeneutic phenomenology in three phases: epoché, narrative collection and macro and micro-thematic analysis of meaning. Results: Three main categories were found in the narratives that affect whether the family becomes a stressor or a support for the couple's relationship. These are: a) Family dynamics, b) Acceptance of the relationship and c) Partner's response to the family. Conclusion: The data showed that individuals seek to obtain harmony within their families and feel secure and accepted. For this they require their partners to support these initiatives. The actions to achieve such security are different, given that family dynamics and expectations of integration can be loaded with rejection, love and/or support. |
